What is Stress?

In the 21st century we live in a fast paced society. There seems to be more pressure on people to do something positive with their lives. We all need a certain amount of stress in order to help us reach our goals. However, too much stress can start to have an adverse affect on our health.

As people we all react to stress in a different way. One person may be able to endure a higher level of stress than another. Because our bodies release adrenalin, when we are stressed out, for some people the more stress they are put under, the better they perform. However, when the body releases too much of this hormone and it starts to build up in the body, then our health starts to suffer.

What are the symptoms of stress?

These are just some of the symptoms we can suffer when we are suffering with stress. Usually, though when you have high stress levels, you may find yourself suffering with more than one of the above.

Too much stress can also lead to weight gain. Very often some people will turn to sugary foods when they are stressed. Others may find they smoke more or their intake of alcohol increases. For instance, how often do you find yourself pouring a drink, after a long day at work? Having a couple of units a day, is not going to hurt you, but if you find you are drinking to excess in order to help you relax or blot out the worries in your life, then sooner or later, your drinking will lead to a dependency.

Too much caffeine can also alter our bodies' metabolism and if you have a tendency to drink more than 10 cups of strong coffee a day, then you may feel pretty spaced out. You may also suffer from regular headaches.

How can I manage my stress levels?

Start by taking a step back and looking at the big picture. It is very important that you take time out for yourself and take regular breaks throughout the day, particularly if you are in a demanding job with deadlines to meet. Look at what is causing your stress. You may also wish to consider the following:-
